About

Russian Hill

Russian Hill is one of San Francisco's most topographically dramatic neighborhoods — a steep rise between North Beach and Polk Gulch with views that reach across the bay to Marin and Alcatraz. The neighborhood is best known to visitors for Lombard Street's famous crooked block, but for residents it offers something quieter and more lasting: a genuinely peaceful urban retreat. The streets are narrow and hilly, the Victorians and Edwardians are beautifully maintained, and the overall character is more contemplative than social. Polk Street on the western edge provides grocery stores, cafés, and restaurants. The neighborhood has long attracted writers and artists, and that creative, thoughtful energy persists today.
