San Mateo
San Mateo is the commercial and cultural hub of the Peninsula — a mid-size city with the services of a large one and the character of a smaller one. The downtown is genuinely excellent: a walkable grid of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and services that supports daily life without requiring a car. 4th Avenue and B Street form the restaurant corridor, with a notable concentration of Japanese and other Asian restaurants reflecting the city's diversity. The neighborhoods range from older established areas near the bay to the hillier, more exclusive areas approaching Hillsborough. Caltrain service is frequent and fast. San Mateo offers perhaps the best balance of value, amenities, and location of any city on the Peninsula — neither the most expensive nor the cheapest, but arguably the most complete.
